What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was nervous about driving in Sri Lanka—left side of the road, tuk-tuks darting everywhere, and my phone’s GPS barely coping. So when we met Sunil at our hotel in Kandy (right on time, actually early), I felt this wave of relief. He had that quiet confidence and a Toyota HiAce that looked way cleaner than my own car back home. The air conditioning was a blessing—the morning was already sticky—and Sunil just smiled when we tried to pronounce “Ayubowan” properly. He didn’t laugh out loud but you could see he wanted to.

Our first day was a blur of temples, roadside fruit stalls (mangoes so sweet they made my teeth ache), and those endless green rice paddies flashing by the window. Every time we stopped, Sunil seemed to know someone—a wave here, a quick chat there. He pointed out things we’d never have noticed: a tiny shrine tucked behind a tea shop, monkeys perched on telephone wires. At one point he suggested a detour to a spot where the mountain mist just hung over the valley—he said it’s better in the afternoon light and honestly, he was right. I still think about that view when I smell wet earth after rain.

The thing is, having a Sri Lanka car rental with driver isn’t just about skipping the hassle of parking or tolls (though not having to count rupees for highway charges is nice). It’s more like having an extra set of eyes—and sometimes ears—for all the things you’d miss on your own. We ended up chatting about cricket scores and his favorite roadside curry spot (which he took us to; my shirt still bears witness to that coconut sambol). There’s something comforting about knowing you can just say “Can we stop here?” and it happens without drama.

By the third day I’d stopped checking Google Maps entirely. We covered so much—Sigiriya one day, then down south towards Galle—with no stress over kilometers because Sunil explained how the daily limit worked right at the start (and yeah, if you go over 100km there’s a small extra charge but it’s clear upfront). The van always felt safe and cool even when traffic got wild near Colombo. We joked about how many papayas we could fit in the trunk but never actually tested it. Maybe next time.
