What’s the experience like?

“You ever seen that green flash?” That’s what our captain asked as we drifted out from Rodney Bay Marina, and honestly I thought he was joking — but everyone on board was watching the horizon like it was some secret handshake. The catamaran felt bigger than I expected, with just enough people to make it lively but not crowded. There was this salty-sweet smell in the air, mixed with whatever fruit they’d put in my first drink (I never did figure it out). We passed by Pigeon Island early on — one of the crew pointed at its outline and told us about old pirate stories, but I kept getting distracted by the reggae playing low in the background.

I’d forgotten how fast the sun drops here. One minute you’re squinting at the water, next thing you know someone’s handing you a glass of champagne and suddenly everything is orange and gold. People started to gather along one side, laughing about who would spot that “famous” green flash first. I think I missed it (if it happened at all), but honestly I didn’t care — there was this easy feeling on board, like nobody was in a rush for anything except maybe another snack or a refill from the open bar. The staff moved around quietly topping up drinks; at one point Li tried to teach me a bit of Kweyol and we both just ended up laughing because I butchered every word.

It’s funny how quickly two hours can slip by when you’re just floating along with strangers who start to feel like friends. The music changed from local hits to something softer as we headed back toward Rodney Bay. Someone said they could still taste salt on their lips — I could too. Even now, thinking about that light fading behind Pigeon Island, I get this little ache for more evenings like that. Maybe next time I’ll actually catch that green flash… or maybe not.
