What’s the experience like?

“Is that really the Colorado River down there?” That’s what I blurted out when we stepped onto the Pat Tillman Bridge — 900 feet up, wind whipping a little, my hands sweating even though I’m not usually scared of heights. Our guide, Mike, just grinned and pointed out how the morning light hit Hoover Dam’s concrete like it was glowing. I could smell sun-warmed stone and something sweet from the breakfast snacks in my bag (cheese and a muffin — better than I expected). We walked right across the dam itself, Nevada to Arizona, which is sort of surreal if you think about it. At one point we stopped to watch bighorn sheep grazing nearby; Mike joked they’re “locals with no sense of time.”

The ride out toward Grand Canyon West felt long in that good way where you can just stare out at endless desert and let your mind wander. Somewhere past Dolan Springs we rolled through this 900-year-old Joshua tree forest — honestly, I’d never seen anything like it. The trees look like something Dr. Seuss would dream up. There was this dry, dusty smell through the open window, mixed with everyone’s sunscreen and a bit of nervous energy because you could feel we were getting close.

I didn’t expect lunch to be so… peaceful? We ate right on the rim at Eagle Point — sandwiches and chips, nothing fancy but somehow perfect with that view in front of you. The canyon colors shift every few minutes; sometimes redder, sometimes almost purple if you squint. Some folks did the Skywalk (not me — glass floors are where I draw the line), but we all wandered out to Guano Point after. There’s this hush there that kind of gets under your skin. Even with tourists around, it feels huge and private at the same time.

On the way back to Vegas everyone was quieter than before — tired but also sort of full in a way that isn’t just about food. Mike handed out cold water bottles and told us stories about old dam workers and desert storms. I still think about that moment standing above the river, feeling small but weirdly happy to be exactly where I was.
