What’s the experience like?

The first splash is always colder than I expect — even in Key West. You feel the salt settle on your lips right away, and there’s this quick rush of nerves before you duck your face in. Our guide, Jamie, handed me my mask and just grinned, “You’ll see parrotfish everywhere today.” She wasn’t kidding. Within a minute, I was floating over coral that looked like it belonged in another world, all purples and yellows, with these little electric blue fish darting around. I kept losing track of time because every few feet something new would catch my eye — someone pointed out a sea turtle but I only caught its shadow slipping away.

Back on the catamaran (Miss Valyn — she’s fast), people were already comparing what they’d seen. One guy swore he spotted a nurse shark but his girlfriend rolled her eyes. The crew poured draft beer and passed around wine; honestly, I was still half tasting seawater but the cold drink felt good in my hands. There’s a moment when you’re drying off and the wind is just cool enough to make you wrap up in a towel, but the sun’s still warm on your face. That weird mix of salty skin and cheap champagne — it sticks with you.

We drifted for a while before heading toward the sunset. Someone started playing music quietly from their phone (not sure who), and everyone sort of fell silent as the sky went orange over the Gulf of Mexico. Jamie pointed out Mallory Square in the distance, where crowds were probably cheering at the sun dropping down, but it felt better watching from here — quieter somehow. I didn’t expect to feel that much peace after all that swimming and laughing, but yeah… still think about that view sometimes.
