What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I nearly missed our pickup because my phone died at baggage claim (classic). But then this big, friendly voice called out my name — turns out our New Orleans transportation service guy had been waiting right by the doors, holding a sign with a little drawing of a trumpet on it. He just grinned and said, “Don’t worry, happens all the time,” and handed me a cold bottle of water before we even left the curb. The van smelled faintly like lemon cleaner and something sweet I couldn’t place — pralines maybe?

Our driver, Marcus, started chatting straight away — not in that forced way, but like he actually wanted to know where we were coming from and what brought us to his city. He told us about growing up in Tremé and pointed out where the streetcar line used to run as we passed under live oaks. At one point he slowed down so we could see a second line parade warming up (the brass band was honestly louder than I expected at 10am). He gave us his card with his cell number “just in case y’all need anything while you’re here.” That felt good — like someone’s got your back if you get lost or need a tip on po’boys.

The ride itself was smooth — not much traffic that morning, just enough sun coming through the window to make me wish I’d packed sunglasses. We talked about food (of course), and when I tried to pronounce “beignet” properly Marcus laughed and said he’d heard worse attempts. It wasn’t fancy or anything, but it felt personal in a way hotel shuttles never do. There’s something about being welcomed by someone who really loves their city — it sticks with you longer than you think.
