What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit it — I was nervous about the “boutique” part. I pictured fancy people swirling glasses and talking tannins, but our guide, Mike, just grinned when I asked if jeans were okay. We got picked up right outside our hotel in Niagara Falls (the New York side), which felt almost too easy. The van smelled faintly of coffee and someone’s floral perfume. There were only six of us, so nobody had to do that awkward shuffle for seats.

The first stop was a family-run place out in the Niagara County countryside. You could hear bees somewhere near the wildflowers and there was this soft breeze off Lake Ontario — not cold, just enough to ruffle my hair. Our host poured something called ice wine (I’d never tried it), sweet but not syrupy. She handed us tiny cubes of local cheese to go with it. At another spot, they had chocolate truffles lined up behind glass; Mike dared me to try saying the name of one in French — I butchered it, but the laughter made the wine taste even better.

We didn’t rush anywhere. Sometimes we just sat outside on creaky benches watching birds hop around or listening to stories from the winemakers about old grapevines and unpredictable weather. The whole thing felt relaxed — not a party bus vibe at all (which was good because apparently drinking in the van is a no-go). By the last winery, my shoes were dusty and my phone was full of blurry photos of vineyards and half-finished glasses.
