What’s the experience like?

You know that feeling when you’re not sure if you’re hungry or just curious? That’s exactly how I felt stepping into Reading Terminal Market with our guide, Jen. The air was thick with a jumble of smells—fried dough, coffee, something savory I couldn’t place at first. We started with a donut so hot it almost burned my fingers (worth it). There was this moment when the sugar stuck to my lips and I just had to laugh—nobody looks cool eating a donut like that. Jen told us about the market’s history while we wandered past stalls, but honestly, I kept getting distracted by the colors and noise—people shouting orders, the clang of metal pans somewhere behind us.

We walked out onto the street and the weather did that Philly thing where it can’t decide if it wants to be chilly or muggy. Our next stop was this little spot for Irish pierogis—soft, pillowy things with a buttery edge. I didn’t expect that in Philly, but apparently there’s a whole story about Irish immigrants here (Jen had facts for everything). Someone asked about cheesesteaks and she just grinned—“Wait for it.” I liked that she didn’t rush us; we could linger and ask questions or just watch people go by. It felt relaxed.

Chinatown was next. We passed under the Friendship Arch and suddenly everything smelled different—ginger, something sweet and spicy. We tried Malaysian roti canai (I’d never even heard of it), tearing off pieces with our hands while Li from the shop explained how her grandmother made it back home. She laughed when I tried to say thank you in Mandarin—probably butchered it. But she smiled anyway.

The pretzel cheesesteak came last—or almost last; there’s a secret dish at the end but I won’t spoil it. The pretzel was warm and salty, wrapped around steak and cheese in this way that somehow made sense after all those other flavors. City Hall loomed in the distance as we ate on a bench. There’s supposedly a cursed statue up there—I’m still not sure if Jen was joking or not. Anyway, Philly felt bigger and smaller at the same time after walking and eating through its streets like this. I still think about that view from Chinatown back toward the market—the city noisy but kind of welcoming too.
