What’s the experience like?

I’ll never forget the first step onto those sun-warmed stones at Tenuta delle Ripalte. The air on Elba Island has this salty-sweet thing going on—sea breeze mixed with wild herbs. Our guide, Pietro, waved us over with a grin and right away started telling us about Aleatico grapes (Napoleon’s favorite, apparently). I was still trying to shake the ferry from my legs, but then we were walking between rows of vines that seemed to tip straight toward the blue of the Tuscan Archipelago. Someone in our group asked if you could see Corsica on a clear day—Pietro just laughed and said you’d need better eyesight than his.

The design cellar looked almost too modern for all that history—Tobia Scarpa’s work, Pietro explained, which meant lots of clean lines and glass. Inside it was cool and smelled faintly like oak barrels and something floral I couldn’t place. The view from the terrace actually made me stop mid-sentence; there’s this sweep of Tyrrhenian Sea that just goes on forever. We tasted three wines (I picked Brut Spumante Rosato, Vermentino, and Aleatico Passito because I can’t resist dessert wine). Each sip came with little plates—pecorino so sharp it made my mouth water, honey from their own hives, bread that left flour on my fingers. I tried to pronounce “passito” properly; Pietro smiled politely but I think I got it wrong.

Lunch wasn’t fancy—just local cold cuts and cheeses—but somehow it felt like exactly what you want after wandering vineyards in the sun. There was a breeze that kept tugging at napkins and someone spilled a bit of rosé laughing at a story about the old villa’s ghosts. Honestly, I still think about that view when I taste Aleatico now. The whole afternoon felt like slipping into someone else’s slower rhythm—and then suddenly it was time to go back down the hill again.
