What’s the experience like?

You get off the bus just outside Naples and suddenly it’s all vines and that deep, earthy smell—like the ground is still holding onto old secrets. Our guide, Paolo, waved us over with a grin and started right in about how Falanghina grapes have been here since the Greeks (he pointed at a gnarled vine like it was an old friend). The sun felt different up here, sharper somehow, and you could see the city far below through gaps in the leaves. I kept thinking about how close we were to Vesuvius itself—just sitting there behind us, quiet but huge.

The walk through the vineyards wasn’t rushed; Paolo stopped every few meters to let us touch the volcanic soil—black and gritty, almost warm from the morning. He told us about Lacryma Christi wine and laughed when I tried to pronounce it (I’m still not sure I got it right). There was this moment when a breeze brought in the smell of wild herbs—I think oregano or maybe thyme—and for a second I forgot we were on a tour at all. Just felt like someone’s guest.

Lunch was in a sunlit room with long tables. They brought out cold cuts and cheeses first, each one paired with a different wine—Falanghina was bright and almost salty; Aglianico tasted deeper, sort of smoky. Spaghetti allo Scarpariello came next (I ate too fast), then some pastry I didn’t catch the name of but wish I had. Everyone talked more as the wine kept coming. Pickup back to Naples was easy—we just wandered out full and happy. The view over the vines stuck with me all afternoon.
