What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was the clatter of heels on cobblestones—right in Poznań Old Market Square, where everything just feels kind of alive. Our guide, Marta, waved us over by the old Town Hall (she had this bright scarf, easy to spot). She pointed at the clock tower and told us about the goats that butt heads every day at noon. I didn’t really get it until she mimed it herself—made us all laugh. The air smelled like baked bread from somewhere nearby, and I caught a whiff of something sweet too. Maybe those St. Martin croissants she mentioned?

We wandered through the Royal Castle’s shadow—didn’t go inside, just stood outside while Marta explained how it was rebuilt after WWII. She got a bit quiet for a second talking about that part. There were students lounging on benches and someone strumming a guitar off to the side; you could almost forget you were on a tour. I kept running my hand along the cool stone walls when we stopped (I do that everywhere). The Imperial Castle looked almost out of place—so much newer than everything else around it. Apparently it’s Europe’s youngest imperial residence? That surprised me more than I thought it would.

I liked how Marta slipped in little stories about Poznań’s history and food—like why people here argue about who makes the best pyry z gzikiem (I still can’t pronounce that right). She even pointed out her favorite spot for pierogi but said we’d have to come back for lunch since this tour doesn’t include food stops. It felt less like being lectured and more like hanging out with someone who just loves their city. By the end, my feet were tired but my head was buzzing with weird facts and funny moments—like those goats again. I still think about that view over the square as we left; colors everywhere, voices echoing off old walls.
