What’s the experience like?

I’ll never forget stepping out of the van that morning in Abu Dhabi—the kind of heat that makes your shirt stick, but somehow it felt exciting. Our guide, Ahmed, handed out cold water right away and joked about “desert air conditioning.” First stop was the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I’d seen photos, but being there was different—the marble felt cool under my feet even though the sun was already high. Inside, it was so quiet you could almost hear your own breath bouncing off the domes. I kept catching myself staring up at the chandeliers and all that white stone. You have to dress modestly (they’re strict about it), so I fumbled with my headscarf for a bit—Ahmed helped me fix it without making a big deal. That made me relax.

After the mosque, we drove down Sheikh Zayed Road—so many glass towers and villas flashing by, then suddenly you’re at this old-school dates market. The smell hit me before we even got out: sweet and earthy, like honey and dust mixed together. I tried a few different kinds (I liked the sticky ones best), and one of the vendors grinned when I asked for seconds. It’s these little stops that stick with me more than palaces sometimes. Speaking of which, we did swing by Emirates Palace for photos—gold everywhere, guards standing straight as rulers—and passed the Presidential Palace too. We didn’t go in but honestly just seeing them from outside felt surreal.

The last part was Heritage Village—sort of touristy but still interesting if you want to get a sense of how things were before all the skyscrapers showed up. There were some craftspeople weaving baskets and a guy making coffee over hot coals; he waved us over to try some (bitter and smoky—I liked it more than I expected). By then I was tired in that good way you get after a long day out, sand stuck to my shoes and my phone full of photos I keep looking back on now and then.
