What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the view—it was the hush. We’d just left the hum of Las Vegas behind, and suddenly there was this quiet, broken only by our guide Mark’s laugh as he handed out coffee and asked if anyone had tried pronouncing “Paunsaugunt” yet. (I hadn’t. Still haven’t.) The drive out to Zion felt like peeling off layers of noise until all that was left were red cliffs and that weirdly sweet desert air coming through the window.

At Zion, Mark pointed out wildflowers I’d have missed—tiny yellow bursts against all that stone—and told us about Kolob Arch being the largest natural arch anywhere. He said it like he’d seen it a thousand times but still liked showing people. We stopped at the Visitor Center for snacks (I picked up a fridge magnet shaped like a hoodoo—couldn’t resist) and then we were back on the road, boxed lunches in hand. Honestly, eating turkey with cranberry sauce while looking at those cliffs felt almost too strange to be real.

Bryce Canyon hit different. The colors are sharper than any photo—like someone turned up the contrast just for us. At Inspiration Point, I tried to name all the shades in front of me (failed after “rust” and “peach”), but mostly I just stood there next to this couple from Texas who kept saying “would you look at that?” over and over. Sunset Point glowed gold right before we left; I still think about how quiet everyone got, like we were all waiting for something else to happen even though nothing did. Maybe that’s what makes you want to come back.
