What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the ironwork — it’s everywhere in the French Quarter, curling around balconies like black lace. We started right on the steps of St. Louis Cathedral at Jackson Square, where our guide (her name was Simone — she waved her hands a lot when she talked about pirates) told us how this place has survived fires, floods, and three centuries of wild history. There was a trumpet player across the square warming up; his notes floated over the smell of chicory coffee from somewhere nearby. I didn’t expect to feel so… awake? Even before my first sip.

We wandered down narrow streets that felt older than anything I’ve seen back home. Simone pointed out these little details: a chipped tile here, a Spanish roofline there — apparently some buildings are older than the United States itself. At one point we ducked into an alley where someone was selling pralines out of a paper bag (I bought one; sticky and sweet). The French Market was buzzing with people haggling over hot sauce and beads. I tried to say “beignet” properly and totally failed — Simone just grinned and said, “You’ll get it by your third one.”

I chose the option with beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde (honestly, why wouldn’t you?). When we got there, powdered sugar dusted everything — even my shirt. The café au lait tasted smoky and comforting, kind of like how the city feels: warm but with an edge. We sat for a while watching street performers juggle oranges and tourists try to take selfies without dropping their pastries. It’s noisy but friendly here; you can just sit as long as you want after the tour ends. I still think about that first bite — soft dough under all that sugar, sun slanting through green shutters.
