What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the slap of cold water on my face—like being woken up by nature itself. We were just a few minutes outside of Chattanooga when we pulled up to the Ocoee River base. The air smelled like wet rocks and sunscreen, and there was this nervous energy buzzing around our little group. Our guide, Casey, had this way of making everyone laugh right before he handed us helmets and paddles. I think he could tell some of us (me) were quietly freaking out about the whole “class IV rapids” part.

I’d never done whitewater rafting before—honestly, I almost bailed at the safety talk because it sounded so serious. But Casey explained everything without making it scary or boring. He even showed us how to grip the paddle so we wouldn’t lose it (I still nearly did). The Middle Ocoee trip is about five miles, but it feels longer when you’re in the thick of it. There’s this stretch where the river throws you around—water in your ears, shouts bouncing off the canyon walls—and then suddenly everything goes quiet for a second except for birds overhead and someone’s nervous laughter. It’s weirdly peaceful between all that chaos.

At one point, I tried to yell something over the roar—no idea what came out, probably just a noise—but Casey grinned back and shouted “That’s why we come out here!” He told us locals call this section “the playground” because it’s wild but not dangerous like some rivers can be. No undercuts or weird traps under the water—just pure whitewater fun. I’m not sure if my arms or my cheeks hurt more from paddling or smiling so much.

I still think about that last rapid—the sun hit the water just right and for a second everything felt slow and bright, like a memory you know you’ll keep replaying later. Afterward, we piled into the van with soggy shoes and swapped stories about who screamed loudest (pretty sure it was me). It wasn’t perfect—I swallowed half the river—but honestly? That made it better somehow.
