experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was the salt in the air — you could taste it before you even saw the ocean. We walked up to the Wailua Nui Luau at the Hilton Garden Inn, and someone handed me a fresh flower lei. The scent was so strong I almost sneezed (but managed not to embarrass myself). There were families, couples, a few solo travelers like me just looking around, all of us blinking in the last light over Wailua Bay. I remember thinking how everyone seemed both relaxed and a little excited — maybe it was just me.

Before dinner, our guide (I think her name was Malia?) showed us how they prepare kalua pig in the imu — that underground oven thing. The smoke from the pit drifted up and mixed with plumeria somewhere nearby. I tried my hand at making a rosette out of leaves — mine looked more like a squashed bug than a flower, but one of the aunties laughed and helped fix it. You could hear live Hawaiian music in the background, nothing too loud, just enough to make you want to linger.

The buffet had all these dishes I’d only ever seen on food shows: huli huli chicken, prime rib (which surprised me), seared island fish. I probably went back for seconds on the poke — no shame. The Samoan fire-knife dance after dinner was wild; you could feel the heat from where we sat. Kids were wide-eyed and even some adults gasped when he spun those flames right by his bare feet. It’s funny, I still think about that moment when everyone went quiet except for the ocean behind us.
