What’s the experience like?

We’d barely left the Harley Davidson parking lot in Las Vegas when our guide cracked a joke about “wine country” in the middle of the Nevada desert. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect—just that I was craving something slower than the Strip. The bus was cool inside (thank god), and someone passed around snack bags while we watched the city slip away behind us. Out there, it’s just flat gold land and those blueish mountains—hard to describe unless you see it. At some point, I realized how quiet everyone got, like we were all waiting for something unexpected.

Pahrump doesn’t look like Napa, but Artesian Cellars felt instantly friendly—like walking into someone’s living room where everyone actually wants to talk about wine. Our host poured a white that smelled faintly floral (I’m not great at tasting notes), and there was this charcuterie board with salty prosciutto and these little caprese bites that disappeared fast. Someone tried to pronounce “Viognier” properly; Li laughed and said we could just call it “the good one.” It’s funny how food tastes better when you’re a bit out of your element.

Charleston Peak Winery was next—more modern but still relaxed. We got souvenir glasses there (mine is already chipped from my suitcase) and tasted reds that made me rethink what Nevada can grow. If you come on a Tuesday or Wednesday, they switch things up with The Wine Down instead—our guide explained it depends who’s open, which honestly makes it feel more real somehow. On the way back to Las Vegas, I watched the light change over the desert through the window and thought about how easy it is to forget places like this exist so close by. Still think about that view sometimes.
